FTDI BUB/Breakout Board to DB9 Serial?

It sounds easy enough in theory, but is it even possible/feasible? Instead of purchasing a USB-to-Serial cable for some projects, and an FTDI BUB board for others, can't I just tack a DB9 onto the end of the FTDI board?

If so: Are there enough connectors on both to match them up? Where do they match up to?

Simply put, no. The FTDI board (assuming the FT232R chip) wants USB on one end and TTL serial on the other.

What you want is the MAX232 chip, or something like Wulfden sells (check out the P4 at http://www.wulfden.org/TheShoppe/pa/index.shtml) that uses a 74HC04.

I hope this helps,

Brad.

So much for my “short cut”.

I have to ask... you really need USB/RS232? With a DB-9?

Seems odd in the modern world.

Brad.

EDIT: I should add that USB to TTL serial adapters can be found on eBay shipped for under $5/each. The only downside is waiting 2+ weeks for delivery. So maybe that helps?

Have you looked at the adapters FTDI offers?
