Has anyone tried making an FTDI chip out of an Atmega microcontroller. Uno uses 16U4 to replace the FTDI chip. Similarly it is possible to do the same with Atmega8/328 or anything similar. Searched a lot on the web but couldn't find much info... Thanks and regards.
FTDI is a proprietary chip. In fact: Windows Update Driver Bricking Counterfeit FTDI Chips
What you really want is a USB to TTL serial chip. Or to write the software for an ATMEL chip that has onboard USB capability.
With that in mind:

But the universal response to such enquiries:
Nothing wrong with doing it, but since the USB to serial chips (other than the FTDI) are so cheap and functional, that you really need to have a serious reason.
