Fuel level sensor for SMALL (<10KW) Power Generators

Hello dear friends,
I'm currently working on a project for school but I have some issues selecting the proper fuel level sensor for this project. I use Arduino, as it is my favorite micro-controller; so the sensor needs to be compatible with this platform.
Someone advised me to use a capacitive sensor since I'm to work with fuel (It can be hazardous if a difference of potential happens inside the fuel tank) . The problem is ,though...finding one that can fit well in a small power generator, more specifically for the Honda EM 4500CX. As many of you might know....this generator can contain only 6 Gallons of Gas. So, the fuel level sensor needs to be as accurate as possible and cheap too
Thank you guys for your suggestions!
Peace

A level sensor for a large tank of gasolene does not sound like a hobby project - compromising the safety of
a petrol tank sounds like the way to cause death, injury and property damage. Even experts get this wrong:

I had the little brother to that generator and it had a fuel level gauge built in. The problem you are going to have in designing something for the fuel tank is it's shape. It is very large, but very shallow.
