with some assistance in the troubleshooting section of the forum we figured out a way to get the accuracy we need. We drop the degrees and just use the minutes and fractional minutes instead 
since a degree is >42 miles and the golf course is in the middle of a degree we don't need to bother with that complication for now.
In a full scale deployment we would have to put an if statement around the whole thing to add some kind of directional correction if say you needed to move from 74.0001 to 73.9989 or something, but we're not concerning ourselves with that mostly because i'm burning out from staying in the lab until 2AM every night.
