Function returning value

First time I actually used a function returning value, object String in my case, in Arduino IDE. Is that normal that the compiler does not flag an error if such function does not have a "return X;" statement? X being any valid symbol.

Yes, perfectly normal. The compiler will give a warning, but no error.

So if I am using verbose during complie is there a way to just see the "red " stuff? (I'll check the preference.txt ).

In my case it just scolls off the screen and that's why I missed the warning. And it does not show at all if not in verbose mode. Come to think of it , this is probably why I had trouble with String.
