I first appended this to my civil war post, but moved it here as the events referred to below are 400 years later and go back to the 11th century.

Up to the mid 1970's the Police station in St Ives was in a very small premises next to the market square.
They decided they need a much bigger site a little outside the town centre, with plenty of space for vehicles etc. They built it.
And tried to get the name of the road changed, very quietly.
Unfortunately for them, St Ives has a keen civic society, well aware of the history of the town, who cried
"you can't do that - it's in the Domesday book"
So the Police remain..........
