Game Gadget: Locate treasure in a house

Hey guys,

I am currently working on a game with a lot of cool gadgets in the style of escape rooms, but with a more open space approach. At one stage the players are supposed to find a small scanner of sorts with instructions...and they have a limited time frame to locate a treasure chest, that is hidden in the game house. It doesn't need to locate the treasure perfectly...but it should give them somewhat precisely as a result the small area that they have to search...I have already looked into RFID, Radio etc....but I feel there must be a better way...I remember with FPV Drone flying...when I lost my drone I could put the googles in front of my body...or in an open box and walk around...at some point, when the signal kept coming back in slowly...I could work my way toward the crash site...maybe something in that direction might be good starting point. I would love four you guys to give me your 2 Cents on the matter. thanks in advance.

Several ways of doing this.

Use an RF module such as RFM22, RFM69 or LoRa module to put out audio beeps that you can hear with a low cost UHF FM handeld such as the Bafangs.

Use an Arduino with the same RF modules to transmit a data packet and use a matching Arduino receiver to tell you the received signal strength, RSSI. Use the RSSI on a display or to change the colour of a Neopixel LED, red for weak signal, green for strong maybe.
