Just wondering does a GBU406 have a built in smoothing capacitor or would I need to add this myself. If so, what value would you recommend.

What you call "smoothing " is a filter capacitor.
The GBU406 does not have the built-in capacitor.
The value will depend on the design of your power supply, based on the voltage and current of the circuit that will supply it.
