Getting gibberish from the GPS modules (BN-280 and Neo-6M)

Hi,

I have Arduino UNO and two GPS modules BN-280 and Neo-6M

this is my code

#include <SoftwareSerial.h>

SoftwareSerial mySerial(2, 3); // RX, TX

void setup()
{
  Serial.begin(57600);
  Serial.println("Hello");
  mySerial.begin(4800);
}

void loop() // run over and over
{
  if (mySerial.available())
    Serial.write(mySerial.read());
}

I connected the modules one by one at following way:
VCC <–> 5v
GND <–> GND
TX <–> 2

and at serial monitor I see the following:
for BN-280

09:50:09.073 -> Hello

for NEO-6M

what I am doing wrong?

Looks like mismatching baud rates. Did you try 9600 in mySerial?

Dmitry,

I duplicated your arrangement with a UNO and a Neo-6M.

Using "mySerial.begin(9600);" it puts correct NMEA sentences to the monitor.

If you ever suspect a problem with the sketch, try this:

. TX of the GPS to pin 1 of the UNO
. open monitor at 9600 baud
. press and hold the UNO's reset button

The NMEA sentences should appear on the monitor (no sketch required).

Also, observe the UNO's onboard leds labelled TX & RX. This helps understand what's happening.

Good luck.

John.

Hi Jpom,

your suggestion to use baud 9600 was very helpful, and indeed resolved the issue with Neo-6M :slight_smile:

But not for BN-280 - there I still getting gibberish

any ideas?

Try a different baud rate perhaps ?

Dmitry,

Looks like a baud rate mismatch. Until you see the NMEA sentences there's no point worrying about sat fix.

U-blox's software "u-center" is an essential tool. Gives you far more information and diagnostic help than an Arduino can.

Download it from u-blox (no cost). I've only used it on a Neo-6M but I expect it will work with any manufacturer's unit that generates standard NMEA sentences.

John.
