Trying to buy a gift for a friend. He wrote an app for android to go along with arduino to send information to the internet. So what arduino product would get this type of job done?

Well, then ask them what they want/need. What you are trying to do is the equivalent of blindly buying cloths for somebody when you don't know what they like or what size they wear. If you live in the US, have the person pick out parts they want on ebay, then you can purchase and reship the parts. Another alternative might be to purchase a refillable credit card in their name/address so they can make purchases them selves.
