GIGA Display Shield IMU Orientation

Hello!

Will someone please enlighten me on the IMU axes on the back of the Shield? I'm accustomed to seeing printed axial directions on boards that host IMU but there is no drawing of the axes adjacent to the IMU on the GIGA Display Shield.

Running the IMU examples (accelerometer/gyroscope) provide the required information but ordinarily the end-user expectation is to have the axes (at least two of 'em) printed on the board. Would like to have the authoritative specification on the board rather than a newbie discovery from a sketch.

My assumptions are based on viewing the Shield from the front:

  • X-axis: tilting the board forward or backward
  • Y-axis: tilting the board to the right or left
  • Z-axis: spinning the board horizontally

Please correct any mistakes on my part. Thanks.

Regards.

Print out the values reported for the X, Y and Z axes of the accelerometer.

Any axis that is vertical while the board is held still will report the acceleration due to gravity, so orient the board in various ways until you are sure which axis is which.

The Bosch BMI270 datasheet clearly documents the orientation of the chip. I was simply wondering on the design decision (at Arduino) to orient in a specific way for the surface mount.

Regards.

Thank you for letting us know of this, we are working to update this section on our tutorials page.
