Golf Simulator

Hi, I am wanting to look more into those golf simulators where you hit a ball into a net/screen and it projects where the ball will land based on the start of the flight. Does anyone know of any useful links that could help me on my journey?

I get the impression that the system you envisage will identify both the direction and the speed of the ball based on its contact with the net or its passage through some sensing light beams immediately in front of the net. None of which is simple.

It would probably also be necessary to detect whether the ball is moving on a curve - I've no idea how that could be done. It may also be the case that the curved flight would only take effect when the ball had slowed down - i.e. well beyond the sensing apparatus.

I don't play golf but I am intrigued to know how one would calibrate such a system.

It could probably be done using two high speed cameras (one from the side, one from above) plus some image processing to calculate the trajectory and speed of the ball. Markers on the ball may help deduce its spin, which also influences its flight path.

This may be a bit too much for an Arduino to handle, I'm afraid. The cameras needed may also cost more (each) than the device linked to.

The gadget in @CrossRoads' link in Reply #4 obviously does not have a down-looking camera.

And I think if I had to pay £1500 for it I would like to try it on a golf driving range just to prove that it is properly calibrated.
