Hi all, I'm in need of a good and not so expensive GPS tracker for a project I'm working on. Let me give you some context:
A friend of my owns a courier service company in Dominican Republic, and he has come in the need to track his trucks while they are on the road. I have a bachelors in Computer Engineering and I'm fairly comfortable in designing a GPS-enabled solution. Basically, what we want to do is create a device that will send the position of the vehicle while it's connected to the battery. That way, knowing the location of the trucks in any time. He has more than 12 trucks, and the solutions that some outsourcing companies provide here are ridiculous: Their systems are not designed well at all, and they are super expensive.
I know how to do all the tracking and sending using an arduino, what I need are suggestions about good GPS trackers that are not expensive.
I did some research first, and found these:
The SPOT tracker is popular, inexpensive and very reliable, at least in the U.S. The company claims it works just about everywhere in the world. SPOT Gen4 | Saved by SPOT | AT
Don't hesitate to ask the company for a discount. The worst that could happen is that they refuse. I think SPOT3 is primarily intended for personal use, but I do know of small transport companies in Canada who use their service, so they probably have a commercial operation of some sort. Who knows, perhaps you would be the first commercial user in the Dominican Republic -- you could be a traveling advertisement for them. If SPOT won't do what you want there is undoubtedly a company that will.
