I am attempting to build the inverted pendulum robot and was wondering what sensors, gyroscopes and accelerometers would be good for my mini project? I don't want to spend crazy amounts of money and was hoping someone could give me a few good examples and where I might be able to obtain them?

I use the MPU 6050 gyro/ accel sensor in some of my projects and it should be fine. You might find it for $4 on ebay / chinese website. It uses I2C communication.
