Good website/store to buy project building materials

Not sensors or electronics, but building material such as metal, wood, plastics for my project. I have a 3d printer at the local library near me if I really want to get ambitious.

However, at the moment I just really want something to put on my servo to start making a prototype for my project (parallax Parallax Standard Servo - Parallax)

Is it possible to attach some knex pieces on the servo or dc motors. Knex seem very accessible, cheap, and easy enough to work with.

Get a low temp craft hot glue gun at walmart.

I have no idea what you have in mind. I know (roughly) what Knex is.

Maybe you can post a diagram showing what you want to do?

Do you specifically want to use Knex or would anything convenient do?

Anything convenient. For my current project, I am building an automatically balancing beam with an accelerometer and servo.

Something like Knex would be good because I can tear it apart and use the materials again for another project.

But what do you want to do?

"balancing beam" conveys no information about the likely mechanical arrangments that are in your head. Make a diagram.

Bringing this topic to life... I havnt found any materials.

Is there a place to buy a host of materials I can use to slap together any project whether it be a beam, a car, or anything else?

I am thinking something along the lines of knex or legos but metal or plastics that have simple beams, gears. Maybe something along the line of what vex uses to make their robots but I just want the building materials and not the electronics.

Here is a good example of something I want to try from scratch: Position of a Ball on a Beam Control System by arduino uno - YouTube

Where do the inventors on here buy there building materials? Thanks.

Hello that would be a good site for electrical parts but I am looking for materials to build stuff like a car chasis. A support beam and transverse beam.

Sort of like this http://www.vexrobotics.com/vexedr/products/accessories/structure/276-2232.html

But will work with my parallax servo and small DC motor.

I am completely new to DIY projects.... can you guys please explain what materials you use to build your housings, shrouds, chassis, and whatever?? I really didnt think this would be a hard problem..

www.sparkfun.com carries a bunch of chassis type parts now, look under Robotics.
Can also try https://www.servocity.com/ and www.hobbyking.com
Am sure there are many others as well.

Those were very helpful. Any hobby stores or chains in the north east US that I can walk into and window shop rather than online?

You Do It Electronics in Needham, MA, Highland Ave eastbound exit off I-95. Turn left before the Hess(?) gas station, look for little sign on the left.

They have the sparkfun stuff and more.
