GPS Question

Im thinking of adding GPS capabilities to a project im working on and I was wondering if anyone knows what kind of interference problems if any there would be between wireless communication via the 802.11... band, and a GPS signal?

Also, can anyone recommend a gps unit.

The project will be operating in up to 2m of water so I will either need an external antenna, or mount the GPS to a mast and run cable down to the unit. Will i run into a problem communicating with the gps 2m away over serial as far as interference or data loss?

Thanks in advance.

Chris

I don't think 802.11 interferes with GPS. You will need an antenna that's above the water. A 2m serial cable will not be a problem.

If the GPS and the 802.11 units are well designed, there will be no problem.

If one (or both) of them either a) radiate outside their operating band, or b) do not properly filter out signals outside their operating band, then you could have trouble.

And neither GPS nor 802.11 will work under water - you definitely need something above the water to receive the signal. Running the GPS serial line a couple of meters should be no problem at all.

Thanks for the replys. I think im going to go ahead with purchasing and see what I can get to work.
