GPS Tracker - coordinating efforts?

I have a terribly unoriginal idea for a project - a gps tracker.

I'd like to get it into a small form factor, low power usage, etc. Like I said, unoriginal.

Has there been any coordinated efforts to create something like this? It seems that many people are working on solving the same problems.

Thoughts?

There are already loads of cheap commercial versions

Low power is always going to be an issue, as the GPS receivers all take power when running, and many don't have a low power sleep mode.

GPS logging is quite a wide subject, could you elaborate on exactly what data you want to log and how often etc

Thats true. I'd like something where i can change how the data is communicated / stored. (gprs/gsm)

Yes, I'm quickly learning this.

The idea to make a small and energy efficient tracker that could be used on a bike or other unpowered uses.

Thanks for helping, I know its obvious that i'm just getting started.
