Guidance on changing global variables from the internet

Hi, I'm working on a greenhouse control and monitoring system for arduino that is roughly split into two parts

  1. taking readings from an arduino and displaying them on a site hosted by azure (i've completed this using some locally hosted php files and a mysql database)
  2. Have the ability to turn on fans/water pumps/ lights connected to the arduino via the same site the values are displayed on(or the ability to turn on or off an "auto" mode which will allow the arduino to do this by itself).

I've completed step one and I'm working on step two. I was looking into teleduino but while it gives me the ability to change pin modes over the internet It doesn't seem to allow setting predeclared variables such as changing a boolean value, I was wonder what other ways I could go about doing this?
