GY-521 Gyroscope

Hey guys I'm having a bit or trouble with my gy-521. Every time I connect 5V straight to VCC of the gy-521 my arduino uno quickly turns off. As soon as I remove the gy-521 from the 5V the arduino powers on. My two questions are, why does my arduino turn off when I plug the gy-521 into 5V, and how should I wire up the gy-521.

The GY-521 is a i2C device. When I tried to connect it to the arduino and run the i2C scanner it just kept on saying "Scanning". I have an arduino UNO R3 as well.

I assume you have some kind of breakout board for your GY-521. What board?

The power problem might be a short circuit between the VCC and GND pins. Shorting out the power will usually shut things down.

Oh whoops. I think I mistakenly told you some wrong information. My gyroscope is actually a MPU-6050. The breakout board is a gy-521 http://goo.gl/Aa9bfv

Is it possible that this short circuit could be caused by soldering?

Yes. Look for solder bridges. If you have a meter, check the resistance between VCC and Ground on your board. It should be quite high,
