Hacking an honeywell/ademco keypad

Hi there, my ademco alarm panel has failed, and I would like to replace it with an arduino. Here's the problem, I would like to use my existing 6000 series (some 6150s and a 6160) keypads, which seem to use an interface similar to (if not) rs-232. I took one off the wall, and hooked it up to an arduino leonardo, but I can't for the life of me get a response from it when I boot it. Has anyone done this before? Can anyone confirm that they do use rs-232, and if not, what do they use? Does anyone have any code to get these things working? Thanks in advance for helping.

Please post a diagram of how you wired it up and also the sketch / program you wrote to read the data from the keypad.

I don't know much about alarms, but I'd be surprised if a manufacturer would use RS232 unless for a remote keypad (is this what you mean ???)

Pictures, circuit diagrams you have traced ...
