Hall Effect Sensor US5881

Hello,

can I use a US5881 Hall Effect Sensor to detect a magnet through a 2-3mm thick wooden surface? How 'close' does the magnet have to be for the sensor to work?

Thanks
Andy

Surely that depends on the magnet?

Reckon the only way to know reliably is to test it...

Thanks for the answer, so the stronger the magnet, the better it will be detected, right?

In general yes, although I have no idea if wood affects things at all... my physics is very rusty.

Hello Andy.

I use a HE sensor. I found it needed to be just a few mm away from the magnet. The magnet is one from a kitchen cupboard latch. It's an oblong shape making it easy to affix to an object.

I don't think wood would interfere with the magnetic field but I don't know. You could experiment with just a magnet & a paperclip.
