Hardware recommendation

Hi All

Beginner here ! I am looking to control 2 four wire steppers and 1 eight wire stepper motor ( and maybe a sensor or two in the future) . Can anyone recommend a suitable arduirno board and peripherals I can use. I am looking to spend less about a 100 bucks or less.

You need to find out the current rating of the stepper motor to choose a suitable driver. Pololu has an inexpensive stepper driver that will provide up to 2A. Each motor will require its own driver; to interface with the arduino you'll minimally need just two I/O pins: one for step and one for direction. This is a standard configuration for most stepper drivers.

The eight wire stepper will need to be rewired to bipolar parallel or bipolar series; the diagram at the bottom of this page will show you how that is done.

Any of the Arduino models will handle these three motors.

Thanks a lot. I am struggling to get the specifications for one of my stepper motors. I have two MAE HY 200-2215-0220-AX04 and one Sonceboz 6530 .R066 stepper motors. I am thinking of using the following:

  1. Arduino mega

  2. Three EasyDriver stepper motor driver (http://www.sparkfun.com/products/10267)

Well the MAE ones are 0.7ohm / 2.2A and the unipolar has 0.75ohm windings. If you wire the unipolar in series as bipolar it'll be 1.5 ohm, and if in parallel 0.37 ohm. Really would be good to know the unipolar's current rating...

Thanks. After some back and forth with the manufacturer (to get the data sheet) they suggested the closest (almost identical) specs of the sonceboz motor are here http://www.sonceboz.com/medias/produits/fiches-techniques/6630-50-v08.pdf . I have settled to use a mega 2560 and the latest easydriver driver for both motors. Can someone confirm if this will work .

No! The EasyDriver is only .75A and those motors are showing 5A or 10A capability. You need a much heftier driver if you want to run those steppers at their true potential. Offhand the only driver I’m aware of is the Geckodrive at ~$100+

Oh well, I guess i will just have to replace these old motors. I will start looking and let me know if you have any recommendations. Thanks for all the great info.

I have officially failed, I think i should leave this to an expert. Can someone tell me what I can use to replace the two motors. I would prefer something I can control using easy/bigeasy drivers and a 12 V power supply. I would like to replace a MAE HY 200-2215-0220-AX04 and the Sonceboz 6530 .R066 stepper motors.
