Hardware WiFi advice

Hi.
I have just started with the Arduino having programmed in Avr Bascom for the last 3 to 4 years.
I have the Uno Board plus LCD shield and a Sensor Shield. Plus lots of kit left over from the Avr days.
Have played with the Uno and am able to program But there is a lot of learning in front of me.
What I am looking to do is to use Wifi to control a model tank.
Yea I know from reading loads of posts from this and other Forums that it can be done…
But what I have NO experience of is the Wifi bit.
I would like some advice on the type of Unit IE Wishield(no longer in production), LinkSprite CuHead(Very expensive shipping to the UK), Zbee (Not sure this can do what I want ).
I also would like to use the Iphone or a PS controller as a controller RCTx Iphone as a example.

Its advice on what WiFi module to purchase that I need to know at this time.
Thanks in advance.

Antony

The lowest cost option seems to be the WiFly RN-VX: http://www.sparkfun.com/products/10822, and you will need an XBee shield for it like this one: http://www.seeedstudio.com/depot/xbee®-shield-p-419.html?cPath=132_134,or this one http://www.sparkfun.com/products/9976. You'll need to work out the best shield combination if you also want to connect your LCD and sensor shields at the same time. Note that for the sparkfun XBee shield may have problems due to the diode used for for level shifting on the XBee's DIN pin, but there are other XBee shields around if you do some searching (avoid the iteadstudio one because it doesn't do any level shifting).

I've been using the WiFly with the seeedstudio XBee shield quite successfully.

I just read through the comments on the http://www.sparkfun.com/products/9976 page regarding the RN-VX, and it looks like you should not try to use this shield with the RN-VX because the level shifting solution (the diode) does not work.

I had read that too so bought the Bees shield from Seeedstudio. It has two bee slots and a proto area. Have been happy with it so far.

Thanks for all the input. Will purchase next week al being well.
