having an apostrophe as a char character

So basically, I need to be able to say that charactervalue1[] = ' ' ' with the apostrophe in the middle being what the array will actually hold. obviously at the moment I am unable to do this as the syntax of this language prevents me from doing it, but I was wondering if anyone could maybe think of a workaround for this issue

char c = '\'';

Search the web for "character literals" or "C++ escape characters" for a more general treatment.

  char c = 39;

Most readable is to use the backslashes:

const char foo [] = "I saw Nick\'s cat today." ;
