If you have more than one board, make sure that you have selected the board you are uploading to in the Tools menu.
It looks like you are "having a problem uploading a program" and not "having a problem with the serial monitor"
Using an accurate title will help you get more useful replies.

The serial monitor is the window that the Arduino can write text to, not the IDE.
