Heavy vehicle detection through seismic waves

I'd like to create a portable and robust device that someone could just put in the soil and it will be abe to detect earth vibrations from vehices and heavy machinery. Most important is that it is robust, so geophones are out of the question.
I am experimenting with a simple piezo sensor but it clearly it wasn't meant for that purpouse.
I have ordered MPU6050 accelerometer, hopefully it will work better.
Any suggestions for earth vibration sensor that is sensitive enough and doesn't break easily are very welcome.
Ideally I would be able to detect a (heavy) vehicle driving on a road at least 100 meters away while 500 meters are desirable.

Why would you think that? A geophone like this one would be among my top choices. They are designed to continue working through even nearby earthquakes.
