Help a Rookie

I'm totally new to electronics, I do know how to solder and stuff and I really want to start in this immense world. I have saved up money that i'm willing to spend in electronics, so that is not an issue. What do you recommend for me to start with? a project and what would I need to order?

I appreciate greatly in advance.

It is always helpful if you have a need or desire to do something and then figure out how to accomplish that goal. Doing someone elses task is just work. Look on the web or around your house and see if there is anything you could automate or log data from and then work on that. You are the best person to decide what you should make.

Thank you Franklin,
I figured there's a couple things i would like to make like a screen (LCD) that could display a timer, where i could input a certain time and when it goes off it triggers an output. Any hints?

Oh, like a bomb detenator?

Just do a google search on Arduino projects and I'm sure something will light your fire.

Hahaha It might be the same but not quite the same intention haha.

I will try that out, I just wanted to ask, I don't want to buy the wrong stuff.

Do you really want to learn? Do you desire to have a knowledge of programming, mechanics, electronics, and a whole host of other skills? There is one kind of project you can do, that will tax your brain and your skills as far as you're willing to take them:

Build a robot.

Dream a little dream - build a being. Its no small task. Start with a desktop or floor rover, if you want to start on the small side. Maybe it might become a "pet", or perhaps fetch you a beer? Just for a minute, imagine what it would take to build a machine to navigate from one point to another autonomously, retrieve an item, then return back to its starting point...

What we humans take for granted, both within ourselves and in those other beings we observe (other animals, insects, and other living beings) - is just how seemingly difficult it is to perform the simplest of tasks. In a great part, robotics is a field in which the experimenter is literally attempting to embody mind in a machine. At a certain point, you begin to think about thinking, and things get real complex after that point.

I cannot stress how much there is to learn about and from the field of robotics. It encompasses so much, so many other disciplines - that it seems like a near limitless pursuit of knowledge.

Try it - what do you have to lose (well, perhaps a lot of time and more than a bit of cash)...

;D

I will try that out, I just wanted to ask, I don't want to buy the wrong stuff.

Well don't over think it either. You will never figure out everything you might ever need in one big final purchase. There are lots of vendors selling Arduino 'starter kits' and they may or may not be the right answer for you, but you can research them.

My suggestion is to just get started now. Buy two things to start, an Arduino board and a digital multimeter, then start learning via the example sketches and simple learning projects. What you need after that will become apparent to you as you learn and read.

Good luck;

Thanks! Yes, I purchased a starter kit (project pack) from makershed and also the "Getting Started with Arduino" book. I will research a little more, I've gotten a few ideas coming to mind after viewing several videos and looking up what other people have made with the Arduino. I do have one question, any resources for programming (beginning) that you would recommend me? Thanks

the getting started with arduino explains some basic programming anyways the arduino website is a real good place to get statrted with
