Help powering arduino with lantern battery

Hi everyone,

I saw on the forum that there are some people who are powering their boards from a 6V lantern battery. Can anyone give a breakdown of exactly how to do this? Do I just need to connect the battery to the power input on the board with a 2.5mm power plug? Do I need additional components like a diode in line at all?

Yes, I am using the Duemilanove board. So in this case, I could use a diode in series with the battery and wire it straight to the "+5V" pin? What exactly would happen if I were to plug it in such that it went through the voltage regulator?

The voltage regulator would not give the correct voltage output only about 3V so your system would not be working properly.
