HELP - Really irritating problem.

Please can someone help with this, I've been through the troubleshooting suggestions with no prevail.

Basically the IDE opens fine and quickly too, all the menus open up and things like preferences are all fine.
However, if I try to compile or upload anything it takes forever. I have timed how long it took to compile the blink tutorial and it finished in 3.5 minutes. I dont get any errors and the process does actually complete, I dont even have to connect the board for the problem to happen.
Im running Windows 7 on a Samsung NC10, I have had it running on this machine before without issue.

I have tried the following:
update, uninstall and reinstall of Java
Arduino builds 22 and 21
set both arduino and javaw to run as admin
set both arduino and javaw to run in compatability mode for XP

If I run the application in XP Mode (Virtual PC) it works fine.

Any suggestions?

Run the application in XP Mode instead as that seems to work?

Any change antivirus s/w is slowing it down?

I would use XP Mode but it's buggy and causes it's own set of COM port bridging issues and I dont have an antivirus installed so it aint that.

I dont have an antivirus installed so it aint that.

hmmm ... maybe that could be the problem.

theres nothing on this machine that shouldn't be.

update on progress
I have forced the use of the included java package, JRE7 and java 6.
neither works so I'm pretty confident this is not a java issue

further update
I have an identical laptop with the same OS build (6.1 7600) and it works fine, however the screens broken so this is no solution.

also the issue persists in safe mode.

I have run virus, adware, malware and spyware scans and the machine is clean

Any bluetooth stuff on there? Folks reporting in other threads that removing bluetooth is fixing slow down issues.
