[Help] Which sensor to use to locate an object (moving/static) in 3D space

Hi folks,

The idea is to make a tank which shoots laser light beam at an object. The tank will have 2 axis rotation 180° on horizontal and vertical axis.
The tank will use an on-board sensor to locate a moving or static object in the three dimensional space.

The big question is: which sensor to use to locate an object in the three dimensional space?

any suggestions?
