Help with avrdude error: usbtiny_transmit

Hello!

I'm trying to program an Arduino Gemma, but I'm running into an error. This is what it says:

Programmer Type : USBtiny
Description : Arduino Gemma. Based on USBtiny
avrdude: programmer operation not supported

avrdude: Using SCK period of 10 usec

avrdude: error: usbtiny_transmit:
avrdude: initialization failed, rc=-1
Double check connections and try again, or use -F to override
this check.

avrdude: error: usbtiny_transmit:

avrdude done. Thank you.

I uploaded the Blink test, and it worked, but when I tried to connect a neopixel using the strandtest from the examples I got this error (the neopixel did light up bright white, but didn't change colors like the code told it to).

I've used this exact same gemma in the past and haven't had this problem before. I'm also trying with the Adafruit Gemma and Flora (with the Adafruit boards installed), and I get the same problem. I was using IDE 1.6.7, so I updated to the new 1.6.8 to see if that would help but it didn't. I also went back to the installation guides to make sure I had everything installed correctly (Windows drivers, etc.) I am using Windows 7.

I looked online and found other avrdude errors, but couldn't find a solution that worked for this error. I'm also new to Arduino and programming, so sorry if I'm using terms incorrectly.

Would getting a new USB cable help?

Any help would be much appreciated, thank you!
