Help with building a automotive canbus interface

Hi,

I’m quite new to Audrino, and would just like some help.

I have an ordered a Audrino due and 2x SN65HVD230 CAN Boards.

I have a car that has Canbus rear lights and what I’d like to do is filter out the message for the indicator light so it doesn’t reach the light and instead when that message is received id like to output a 12v out signal so I can power a new rear light I have attached to the car.

The plan is to cut the can signal into the rear lights hence the 2 can controllers and only filter out the messages related to indicators or hazard lights and let all other messages through.

Would I be able to achieve this with my setup or would something else be required or maybe would there be something better I can use for this project.

Thanks in advance.

I think it might work.

Do you know the frame IDs you need to Filter?

No, I’m going to to start looking at all the messages tomorrow and testing them out to figure out what the indicator message is. I just thought if there was anything else I need to order I might as well do it now so I can get this project under way

Probably some DC/DC converter to get down the voltage and stabilize it.
For driving your lights some relay- (, transistor- or mosfet-) boards.

Here is some information that may help you. Modifying brake lights is generally illegal, as they must remain red and meet specific brightness standards. It's important to check your laws, as regulations vary.

Just to give you a little bit of a back story, I’ve imported a new car from America to the UK and unfortunately the car has the brake light as the indicator light as well in one which is illegal in the UK as we need a separate amber indicator to the red brake light. The car is not produced for the European market and there aren’t any correct light for tor me to fit, I’ve looked for aftermarket solutions to get this sorted but there are none available and I’m currently stuck with a car I can’t register or drive. When I checked the lights I realised they were Canbus hence why I need to build this project to filter out the indicator message to stop it tuning on the brake light an instead output a 12v signal to a amber indicator.

Any help on any other hardware I would require would be great.

Thank you

I am assuming that vehicle is available in the UK. Have you tried contacting the manufacturer or dealer to obtain the correct headlights? They should be able to provide you with the exact specifications or replacements needed for your vehicle.

No the vehicle is not offered to the European Market at all and only in North America. The manufacturer does not offer any other tail lights unfortunately and have no plan on releasing the vehicle in Europe and have told me that they cannot help with my issue.

Does anything else turn on with the lights? Can you wire your addition directly to the existing lights? If so, it would create far fewer problems than interfacing with the CAN bus. The CAN bus is not protected against mistakes, and sending the wrong message could potentially cause damage to the system.

Get on the various social media platforms and see if anyone else has imported such a car. Is the problem with just one model or one year of the car? The car can't be a one-off, so what year did the system you have was first used? Anyone in the EU also import the same car?
