I guess it depends on what voltage the battery pack is. If its 6V, then a buck type regulator could work while depleting it to 4.5V. There still could be considerable energy left at this level. If the battery pack is 4.8V, then this regulator wouldn't be very suitable.
The buck/boost type can provide 5V out while depleting the battery pack to 3V.
