Hello everyone,

I am fairly new to Arduino still, and need some help getting meterials to help run the motor. Ideally I'd like to avoid having to cut wires if possible, but I'll do so if need be.

From what I understand, to run the 12V motor, I'll need a 12V 2A power supply, but I'm not sure which to get? From what I've researched, there are just plugs that can give that power supply, but to power the motor driver you would need to cut the cable to access the inside. Is there a way to do this without cutting? In my Mega starter kit I have a 9V 1A power supply and a Power supply module, could I use something like that but 12V for both to run it instead?

Also what cables are recommended to run the power? Should I use the ones that came in the kit, or should I get something more heavy duty?

Any help at all is very much appreciated.

Maybe a drawing of how you plan to connect everything will help us to help you.

What are the specs of the motor? That will determine the current that the power supply needs to be able to deliver.

For anything power related I use buy electricity cable as used in house installations. Gauge depends on power requirements.

I found this tutorial online, and am thinking of following it in a similar way. I wont be using a button but a USB foot pedal instead to control it.

As for the specs of my motor, this is what I got:

The ancient, very inefficient L298N is suitable for only the smallest of toy motors.

For that linear actuator, you will need a modern motor driver capable of handling several Amperes (the stall current, typically 5 to 10 times the free running current). Pololu has the best selection.

A 12V, 2A power supply will probably not be sufficient.

The product page doesn't seem to list the maximum current draw (either the stall current or full load current).

You will need to determine that before you buy anything else, or buy a different actuator from a more responsible seller: one who provides accurate, useful specifications.

How would I determine that? Unfortunately I've lookedd around and it doesnt seem like this product has a datasheet that I can find. If this isnt possible, I dont mind buying another linear actuator, but I'd rather it be cheaper if necessary.

Edit: just something to think about... if your robot will work connected to the wall, is it really necessary to use a 12V motor? (you won't go that far so quickly anyway)

If you have already purchased the actuator, use a multimeter to measure the motor winding resistance. The stall current will be about 12V/(resistance in Ohms).

Or, use the meter in Ampere range to measure current draw with a heavy load applied.

The power supply and motor driver should be rated for the stall current, or at least twice the full load current.

I just realized I posted the wrong product page! I thought it was the same as I bought but mine has different specs. Mine is 30mm/s and 20N (still 100mm length) instead, though that doesnt help much with the amperage question.

I think I may have gotten a bit in over my head here, could I get a recommendation for a simpler way to do something like this? So far I only have the UNO mega kit and the actuator, so what would a good replacement actuator be. Ideally something that works for a beginner since I'm getting a bit overwhelmed.

Mostly what I need to do is just have a motor to push an attached rod. So is there a simpler solution? The rod is going to have some resistance and go through a plastic tube so there will be some resistance.

Until you can tell us what it is you are trying to build, we will be making random suggestions. However, from your own postings to date, it seems you need to learn electronics first, then some programming. That will take months to years, depending on the time you invest. Maybe search for a local maker club and attend meetings there to get some first-hand guidance.

I'm trying to create what I think at least is quite simple.

Just some way using an arduino to push a rod back and forth through a tube, with the rod being connected to an actuator or servo of some description so that it can move. The actuator will be controled using a foot pedal.

I specifically need help with the servomotor and what kind I should use, how to power it and then control it using arduino, and finally what wires to use to connect the power supply.

Unfortunately, you aren't providing enough information for anyone to make helpful suggestions.

"push a rod through a tube" isn't useful information.

Post a picture of the rod and tube, and **provide basic measurements** of length of tube, length of rod, diameter of tube, diameter of rod, distance the rod moves, the amount of force required to move it, the speed of motion and frequency of repetition.

Consider taking the time to give the bigger picture. For example, what is the point of this exercise?

Why complicate the project with an Arduino? All can be accomplished with a linear actuator, a proper foot switch and a power supply. Perhaps a microswitch or two to limit the movement.
