Help with new iMac

Hi all.

Just got myself a new I MAC pc, I have re downloaded the IDE to the Mac's OS system, and I am now trying to get my Arduino UNO to talk to it. I have connected my UNO I have selected the "Blink" sketch, tried to download it and I get the error message below, As I am new to mac's I thought I would seek advice on this error -

Arduino: 1.8.13 (Mac OS X), Board: "Arduino Uno"

Sketch uses 924 bytes (2%) of program storage space. Maximum is 32256 bytes.
Global variables use 9 bytes (0%) of dynamic memory, leaving 2039 bytes for local variables. Maximum is 2048 bytes.
avrdude: stk500_recv(): programmer is not responding

It's Big Sur, perhaps

is of interest.

And/or google "big sur arduino" - misery has company.

Could you maybe install VirtualBox, and run the IDE on Ubuntu, under emulation?

If you are going to go the "virtual" route, you can still use MacOS, there are other reasons to do. See

any such undertakings will garner you another merit badge, but they are reasonably straight ahead and trod paths.

I am dismayed to see (google glance) it still seems to be a problem. Also: a special place in hell for websites offering information without any DATE of publication, grrrr.

Hi, Yes I upgraded to Big Sur on advice.

If it's possible, I suppose I could download Virtual Box but I do not know what it would do, I have never heard of Umbunto, If I download Virtual Box is there a link to Umbuntu?

Check out my link, and/or google "virtualbox Ubuntu" for info on @AWOL's idea.

Ubuntu is the name of a popular Linux distribution. So running as a guest on you Mac. People do it, I have not.

Either approach will involve a number of steps, some of which may make complete sense. Most. All even.

If I needed to, I would do the MacOS route, just because that's what I've been using since never mind precisely how long.

Oh, and find a better Mac advisor! Big Sur wrought Big Changes and dumped a bunch of software into the can't use it anymore without some trouble bin. For whatever gain I do not know.

It occurred to me while I was making a tofu and roasted red pepper sandwich with hummus that

Any virtual approach as has been discussed here might fail, depending on how the host OS and the visitor connect.

If the failing USB drivers remain involved because the guests engage at a relatively high level, you'll still be screwed. <- technical term there.

It seems likely that from a certain point down Apple/BigSur will still be involved, and still be an issue. I would not proceed until I found someone who claimed to have it working all the way to uploading blink.ino.
