I also heard many good things about the Sabertooth motordriver. It is also very versatile.
I use the following IMU: IMU Analog Combo Board Razor - 6DOF Ultra-Thin IMU - SEN-10010 - SparkFun Electronics for my mini segway, but I think I will order one with a lower resolution for this project, as +-3g accelerometer and 300deg/s gyro is a bit to much - I think +-1.5g and 50deg/s would be sufficient for my needs.
