im brand new to the world of arduino i bought a diecimila board and set it all up got really excited when i linked a VU meter to GND and pin 13 and uploaded the basic blink example and now i cant do anything else whenever i try to upload the blink code again but with different values all i get it this

avrdude: stk500_getsync(): not in sync: resp=0x00
avrdude: stk500_disable(): protocol error, expect=0x14, resp=0x51

i am on win xp professional edition please help me out

It seems that auto reset is not working properly.

Have you tried this

Device Manager -> Com Ports -> USB Serial Port -> Port Settings -> Advanced button -> Set RTS On Close

I've tried to sprinkle this info around my site but apparently need it in a few more places.

thanks for the reply i have located device manager and usb serial port but i cannot find advanced button

I don't think you need the "set RTS on close" option.

Check out the troubleshooting guide for suggestions.
