Sorry to be a retard, but I haven't been on irc in over a decade.
How do I do it? I downloaded mirc and put irc.freenode.net in the server name it doesn't connect. Or fail to connect 
Try going into options, servers and then adding one as:
Random server
chat.freenode.net
6665-6667,7000
Freenode
or something like that. That's what I have for it but it's been so long since I set it up.
You also have to register with nickserv for the arduino room, it will tell you that you cannot post until you have done so.
Have a play around and see what happens
