Oh, almost forgot. I used a Adafruit Electret Microphone Amplifier - MAX9814 with Auto Gain Control [ADA1713] as a microphone. Max gain can be ajusted with a jumper. I did look into how to change the gain electronically/electrically but did not end up needing adjustable gain control.
