HMI of industrial PLC on the web

Hi:

I was wondering if arduino could be used to make the HMI (of an industrial PLC) available for view on the web? So the idea is to build a device based on arduino which will communicate with the PLC and make the HMI information available on the web. Any guidance in this regard will be highly appreciated.

What is the reason for doing this? I am sure arduino could be used for this stuff but the most PLCs (if not all of them) are designed for SCADA and HMI mediated via ethernet. (Sorry for luck of english)
