Hobby king

A few weeks ago i recieved a delivery from hobby king from their uk store.

Today i had a supplementery invoice from Fed ex for supplementary tax plus a 12 handling fee.

Anyone had this ?..

Customs taxes and fee...

Yes, can happen when ordered things from abroad (but they never seldom tell you)

I had already paid vat from the uk store.
It seems the extra is import duty plus a handling charge.

Wont be using them again.

Here in the US the package is always described as a "gift". I assume that is done to evade any import duties.

VAT is not chargeable on exports to outside the EU.
Ask them for a refund.

I puchased from their uk store and paid vat as expected.
The extra charge was for import duty plus handling charge which was not expected.

Probably in the small print which i did not read..

By ordering from uk store i expected all this to be included inthe cost.

A con to be aware of.

In the uk i believe that a gift has to have a value of less than 47. After which import duty is payable.
Often with a handling charge which can easily exceed the duty.

In this case for speed i used Fed ex who probably used an automatic programme that caught me.

If i used the three week china post , probably would have got away with it

But VAT isn't payable on goods exported to outside the EU.
Last I heard, the US is outside the EU.
Ask for a refund of the VAT.

UK import duty (VAT) is payable on all imported goods (except those rated at zero rate VAT or where VAT has been paid in another EU country). However, because of the costs of implementing small payments, goods valued at less than about £20 (about US$30) are generally ignored. The handling charge is made by Royal Mail to reimburse them for the cost of collecting the duty. Large importers such as businesses, who pay the duty direct to HMRC, do not incur a handling charge. As far as I'm aware, calling something a gift has no effect on the duty payable.

I think the problem is i ordered it from the uk store as im in the uk.

I suspect hobby king has an arrangement for vat but not for duty.

I find it strange that hmr&c would allow that though.

Edit.

I ordered from their uk warehouse thinking everything was included.
I suspect the warehouse does not exist with everything delivered from china.
Their uk online shop obviously has a vat arrangement though.

Hi,

Boardburner2, you are a UK resident?

Okay, I'm game, why is Fed ex being used to for a local delivery.

Overseas possibly, yes but locally?
How big was the item, did they have to use a forklift?
Would the item have fitted in a prepaid satchel?

Tom....

yes am a uk resident.
items were small but added up in value.
on the site fed ex offered a fast delivery which i wanted.
i missunderstood what hobby king uk whareouse was offering i think.

i ordered from their uk site which charged vat.
the notice from fed ex shows this but charges duty plus collection charge.

I think you'll find that their site is located in the UK but legally outside of it, in a "Free Port" area.
I don't know the rules for that, but duty and VAT seems wrong to me. Was the VAT on the whole order or just on the delivery charge (which would be correct)?

Vat was on the whole order and was correct.
The bill from fedex shows the vat as paid but duty payable.

If they are in the uk why the discrepancy between postie and fed ex delivery times ?

Elsewhere i have seen them mention their 'European warehouse and american warehouse '

A pal bought a laser cutter and had to wait 10 days or so for delivery, when it arrived it clearly came for portsmouth.

I enquired of same co and was told i could have it in 2 days if i paif fed ex priority.

I thought that odd. Afaik fedex do not do pallet delivery ?

Yet when i order from digikey from uk store , it arrives from us airmail and have not had any duty demands yet.
