hooking up usb shield question

I currently have this usb shield for arduino. It wont power up my arduino when i plug into computer. Do i have to program arduino to do so?

The schematic and eagle files show NO connection between 5volt shield-Arduino and 3.3volt shield-Arduino. Only Vin is joined, so only if you power the Arduino via the DC socket (or Vin), the shield also gets power. That is if the slide switch on the shield is "on". Does not work the other way. I suppose the shield's USB is for slave devices only. Leo..

So the usb socket on the shield cannot be used to power up the arduino?

Correct. You can't even power the shield from a computer connected to the Arduino USB socket. Power has to come from the DC socket (or the Vin) to run both. Leo..
