I bought these really nice steppers with screw. Now I need to put some sort of caddy/tray on that screw so I can drive it up and down. But I can't see how to take this apart, except by braking it up.
Any ideas how to make and put on a screw driven caddy?
They look like they're out of cd-rom drives. I think the only way is to prize the end of the frame (furthest from the motor) away carefully so that they come free.
I guess they are small motors that can't take heavy loads.
I suggest attaching the caddy by wrapping some wire into the screw - no need to break open the mechanism.
It looks like the screw may be a square-shouldered thread with a very coarse pitch so I suspect it would be hard to get a matching nut - unless you have a lathe and could make one yourself.
Do a search for "lead screw nuts". There are companies that specialise in this kind of thing. With the pitch and thread diameter, someone is bound to have something suitable sitting on the shelf.

Sorry I don't get it. Do you think attaching the wire to thread and than wire to the caddy? Good idea, never thought of that!
What I was planning was, one has these pliable plastics. One needs to be cooked in a boiling water, when it becomes soft. When it is left to cool down, it becomes hard and takes on the shape of the mold. So I thought to just heat it up and wrap it around the screw and let it cool down.
Second idea was to use air-drying plastics. Same as above. One just need to cover the screw with talcum powder, so that air-drying plastics doesn't stick to the screw.
All in all, 3 good ideas. I'll try them all and report back
These units are not meant to be taken apart. Suspect a two-part nylon nut
is used to clamp onto the leadscrew in the actual CDrom drive, so do something
similar. Perhaps someone's already got a design up on thingiverse?
