Thx guys! As you mention it seems to be a "regular" brushless DC motor, although it really looks and feels like a stepper. Funny how an assumption could lead to so much confusion 
In this case a BLDC driver is needed, apparently there is not much I can do with the Arduino itself to run this motor. The motor is expected to draw maximum 3A, I was thinking to buy this driver and hope for the best
