How does one set his avatar?

Hello!
For one of the other boards, I can set an avatar to be anything I want.
However for this one it seems to be not possible, at least for me. So how has everyone accomplished it?

Time has meaning, but what does it mean?

At the top of the screen where it says:

Good Afternoon doctorwho8, you have 0 messages

click on the word "messages". This will take you to a screen where you can edit your profile and set your avatar
