It may be used to see if something is the right way up.
(For a simple project where you want to throw a disc and see which way it has fallen)
When the Up side is UP then all the contacts are connected together.
When it is up side is facing down then all the contacts are open. (No connection between any pins)
There is a small piece of metal that physically slides to the other side when you flip the sensor.
It acts as a simple mechanical switch which close when the UP is facing up, and switch opens when the Up side is facing down.
