How long can a stepper motor run continuously?

How long can a stepper motor run continuously?

Until the power supply, the circuit controlling it or the motor itself fails

Why do you ask ?

They are rated for continuous duty normally, but under the assumption they are bolted on
by the front plate to something able to help sink heat away from the motor. I'd derate the
current 20% or so if that's not the case - you can monitor the motor temperature (common
ratings are for maybe 60C above ambient at nominal current after an hour or two - they definitely
run very hot).

They are painted black to radiate as much heat as possible.

The only thing to wear out in a stepper is the bearings.

The bearings will be the first to wear out. Stepper motors do not have thrust bearings for axial loads. So, so much depends on your project design. I had a selective soldering machine that had 4 stepper motors. 3 For the three axes and one for the solder pot pump. The pump motor ran all the time when soldering, sometimes two shifts a day for 5 days a week. We never took any of the motors off or replaced them and the machine was still fully functional after 11 years when we auctioned all the business assets. Your results may vary because of the quality of your motors.
