Hi!
Im interfacing an HD44780 display, and i am not sure i can drive the backlight from the Arduino Deumileanueve, can i pull 100-80mA from the 5v pin on my arduino? how much can the 5v regulator on the board produce before it breaks?

Hi,
the maximum current from a IO-pin is 40mA.
The on-board regulator is good for at least 250mA.

It depends on the input voltage. The limit is caused by the permitted heat dissipation not the current limit of the regulator which is 1A. To get the most out of it only have a voltage of about 7V, ay extra gets wasted in heat.
