But how did I know the position of the car in real time.

It looks like the equivalent of an 1970's teletennis game on a huge screen, where the players. instead of using a control knob to move the position of the racquets, use the forward and backward movement of their cars to achieve the same thing.

GPS probably does not have the resolution required for this.

Maybe use lots of beam break sensors at track level? Maybe use an overhead camera and computer vision system?
