how should i proceed with my project

our college has 5dg sets whenever there is no supply from utility grid then,the operating personnel has to go and manually turn on.
We want to make this automatic wherein the person who is anywhere in the college should be able to turn on the dg sets as he wishes from far to avoid unnecessary delay in the operation.
So now how do i begin in this regard?
How can i make it automatic i am eee student have fair knowledge about micrcontrollers.
Should i use IOT for this ?
If so then, how should i proceed in that domain..
Please give your suggestions..

how many people need remote access?

Radio would work if only one or few remote's are needed and it's within range.

ethernet or sms could be used for greater range or for a larger number of user's.

If the power is off, is Internet available?

If the diesel generator sets are large, you probably need to get automatic start circuitry from the generator supplier. If the generators do not have the auto start feature, then there may be a reason for wanting the generators manually started. There is a risk that the generator might tie into a faulted system or try to back feed the electrical grid.

We searched about automatic mains failure switching. There are readily available AMF panels but cost is too high because it implements extra functions other than just automatic switching. And auto start feature is been provided by the supplier but as i said AMF panels need to be installed in addition with the dg set. This panel cost is high because it has PLC embedded into it which communicates with the existing PLC (of the dg set).
As our college demands only automatic switching and does not want to prefer those high cost AMF panels that is why we wanted to implement this project.

The collage needs to evaluate the potential legal issues with a DIY project that allows a "blind start" of the dg units in the event that there resulting "issues".
